Bush’s priorities are not America’s priorities

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

$180 Billion to wage war in Iraq and Afghanistan, with virtually no questions asked.

But…

Bush will veto $6 billion to provide health insurance to millions of needy American children.

Where is this president’s priorities?  Why is he threatening to hurt America’s children?  Republicans, what is wrong with your party??

Amadinejad And the Sharp Edge of Free Speech

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Amadinejad had has moment on stage. It was not the moment the “petty dicator” had dreamed of. But he had his moment.

Perhaps Bollinger was too hard on Amadinejad. Perhaps not. But it doesn’t really matter.  Both ‘Dinny’ ad Bollinger were heard. Free speech is not always friendly, nor is it always polite and coordial.

Ain’t that America.

Don’t be afraid of the speech you hear, especially when its spoken by those who are willing to take responsibility for it. Rather, be very afraid of the people who would prevent you from speaking or listening.

Free Speech is the most basic and cherished of American values.  Leave it alone!

Let Ahmadinejad Speak

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

What the hell is going on with America?  First the Senate votes to repudiate MoveOn.org for speaking.  Now we are terrified of a silly little Nazi man from Iran.

I agree with Columbia: Let Ahmadinejad speak. Through his words and actions, he will reveal himself.

America was built on freedom of speech. Despite George W. Bush’s attack on our rights, we are Americans and we will speak and we will listen.

Let Ahmadinejad speak.  We will listen, we will decide and we will have our say about him.

That is America.  There is no need to be frightened of America or Ahmadinejad.

I just donated $25 to MoveOn.org

And you should too.

This is the first time I have donated to this group. They are getting the attention of the U.S. Senate, and for that they get the support of this Moderate Liberal.

Senators Vote Against Free Speech by condemning MoveOn.org

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Today the Senate passed a measure condemning MoveOn.org for a newspaper ad it ran last week, questioning Gen. David Petraeus as he stumped to win support for continuing the war. The move came as President Bush is flailing to win support of his failed policy of Iraq, and accusing Democrats of cowering to the political action group.

Have you seen the ad? Take a look. We see it as very thoughtful, factual and timely. It is not derogatory.

Just when one thinks that they have seen it all from this Senate, they find another way to express their childishness. Shame on the 75 Senators who voted for this childish measure, which accomplishes absolutely nothing, but rather reveals just how incapacitated this body has become.

To the Senators who do not support MoveOn.org, what you have accomplished is not a repudiation of their tactics, but rather a validation of the group’s power. We are all talking about MoveOn.org now, aren’t we?

MoveOn.org is nothing but a loose-knit collection of people who are not afraid to fight for their beliefs.  By repudiating MoveOn.org, Senators, you insult the truest of Americans who are willing to do the heavy lifting on Iraq that this disgusting Senate body is fully and morally incapabile of doing.

Shame, Senators. Get the hell to work, and stop trying to divert us from the truth.  How dare you take on such a ridiculous issue while Americans are dying in Iraq.

A Republican Sponsored “Carbon Tax” in my lifetime? Maybe…

Monday, September 17th, 2007

There as a very interesting article in the New York Times today by N. Gregory Mankiw,   a professor of economics at Harvard. He was an adviser to President Bush and is advising Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, in the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

In the article, titled “One answer to global warming: a new tax,” Mankiw (presumably a Republican by his credentials) argues a strong case in favor of carbon taxes. He quotes Gilbert Metcalf, a professor of economics at Tufts, who he says has shown how revenue from a carbon tax could be used to reduce payroll taxes in a way that would leave the distribution of total tax burden approximately unchanged.

Do my eyes deceive me, or are there pockets of enlightenment within the Republican Party? With leadership from people like Mankiw, is it possible in my lifetime to transform the Republican Party? Could it possibly in my wildest dreams make the transition from its ”do nothing” see-no-evil politics of pollution to an environmental global leadership position?

Despite Mankiw’s welcome article, the silence is deafening from the Republican Party when it comes to global warming. Yet, the Moderate Liberal finally sees a tiny glimmer of hope from the jokers on the right.

Is America ready for a Clinton Monarchy?

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Great article by Steven Stark. Require reading for Moderate Liberals.  Steven states very eloquently what we have been trying to say for months.  Clinton is not the Dems best candidate.  Be skeptical of her “experience,” gleaned through marriage.

Where the Democratic candidates stand

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Check out this excellent mash up debate of the Democratic candidates on Yahoo!

Also, immediately following Bush’s predictable national address tonight, change channels to MSNBC to hear John Edward’s nationwide address to the American people.

What Petraeus will say

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

If you haven’t read it yet, here’s Gen. Petraeus’ letter to his troops, outlining what he will tell Congress this week.

Basically, you can read between the lines whatever you want. The surge has succeeded, the surge has failed. Its about what we expected he would say:  a little progress here, a little there, lots more to be done.

What you will not hear in the weeks ahead is any sort of discussion about how this surge is causing our national debt to also surge, as America slides toward bankruptcy.  The standard Bush hubris of “fight ‘em over thar so we don’t fight ‘em over here” will prevail as Congress remains powerless to stop King George.  Bush continues to play into Bin Laden’s hands, spending your children’s future on a war he can’t win. By the way, did you read in the newspaper that the National Debt Clock has now tripped the $9 trillion mark?  I thought not.

In an effort to neutralize Iraq as an issue in the national election, expect the Republicans to start talking about withdrawing troops “in 6 months” or later. They will start talking optimistic, but its all bunk, the kind of stalling tactics my children use when they don’t want to go to bed:  “can’t we just wait till the next commercial?” Or in this case, “lets wait till the next Petraeus update.”

As John Kerry so aptly put it once, we’re “stuck in Iraq.”
